Faces from the Twenties

I was inspired to transform these young women from the 1920's into large and colourful oil paintings embellished with gold, silver and copper leaf. I enjoyed turning black and white photographs in to colour capturing these beautiful women in the prime of their lives, in oil paint.

Name unknown

Nothing much known about this woman. I choose the photograph because of the light coloured eyes and hair and mysterious looks.

Rembrandt

It was a challenge to imitate the style and painting techniques of Rembrandt. Over the years he changed from a fine painter to a more expressive painter which make the interpretation of his work more difficult.

Rembrandt 1629

As far as I know, the viewer sees Rembrandt's teeth for the first time. Painting teeth is not easy, so I was please that he didn't have a broad smile.

Rembrandt 1630

This is where Rembrandt lets us see a change in style. A rougher and looser way of applying the paint.

Rembrandt 1632

Here Rembrandt is quite young. The beautifully painted lace collar is reflected in his face, showing the almost impossible to copy technique of playing with light.

Rembrandt 1650

This painting was a battle to say the least. It is not only the last painting in the series, but it was the most labout intensive. Personallly I feel this is one of the best and I am more than satisfied how the helmet turned out.

Rembrandt 1652

This portrait of the master himself was the first one in the series that I painted. I had never painted a portrait so large before. It was therefore a challenge to reproduce this picture.

Rembrandt 1658

I wanted to paint this picture larger than the rest of the paintings in this series, as I think Rembrandt wanted to appear imposing. I also choose this one because of the colours. After working with a farely sombre palette for some time, the colours were quite refreshing.

Rembrandt 1659

Here Rembrandt looked like a friendly old man with a kind look in his eyes. The amazing way that he applied the thick paint to the canvas is difficult to imitate. Therefore the end result is very rewarding for me.

Rembrandt 1659

The lack of light of this portrayal of himself suggests that it was painted in the middle of the night by candle light. The face looks extremely dramatic and was a real challenge to paint.

Rembrandt 1662

This is one of Rembrandt later pieces. It is known for the really rough aplication of the paint. The wonderful brush strokes on the head band and forhead show what a great talent he had for portraying light.

Pet Portraits

Being an animal lover it is very gratifying painting animals. Creating lasting memories of peoples beloved pets is always very rewarding. I like to capture the expression and character of each unique animal in paint.

Bolli

Bolli is a stray dog rescued from Spain. He now lives with his owner in Holland.

Mick the Dachshund has a lively character which I think I captured very well.

Kaya

This lovely English Bulldog is increadably strong and has such a soft character. We take her for a walk every day.

Davy

Davy the Collie dog has such wonderful long fur to paint. I choose to add a colourful background to bring his colourful fur.

Trix

This lovely little dog was scared and needed to be comforted with a dog biscuit. She sat perfectly for her portrait.

Hinault

The lovely Hinault with his finished portrait in oil paint. He was named after the famous French cyclist.

Motchi

Motchi was painted from a photograph because he lives in Spain. He also has his own Instagram page.
